ABOUT US

We’re CatalystNJ

We provide a bridge between two groups that often feel worlds apart: local officials and young people. High-school students may feel their opinions are dismissed due to their age or lack of political experience, but they are the future of the community, and their perspectives are critical. By offering this platform, I’m not only giving students the tools to participate in civic life, but I’m also creating a valuable resource for officials who want to hear from the younger generation.

MEET THE FOUNDER

Sahana Manikandan

Sahana Manikandan is a junior in high school, who is passionate about elevating youth voices on the pressing political issues of our time. Interested in the mix of politics, ethics, genetics, and the law, she spends her time pondering about "What if?" questions—learning about the world she lives in and what it means. In her free time, she enjoys baking and crocheting. She is also an avid debater in her school league and enjoys conversing with her peers.

WHAT WE DO

As a young person navigating local politics, I know how difficult it can be for students to get involved.

Over time, I saw that many of my peers were passionate about issues like climate change, education reform, and public safety, but they didn’t know how to take the first step toward making their voices heard. From that observation, I wanted to build something that would not only give young people a platform but also teach them the skills necessary to effect change.
